The gender-specific terms are "colt" and "filly" for young males and females, respectively, which each eventually become "stallion" and "mare," respectively, after maturation. The term "foal" refers to either a male or female horse. Hunter Under Saddle is a riding discipline with emphasis placed on walking, trotting, loping and smoothness of gait, Fender said.Ĭoncerning breeding, the Fenders have two mares that are in foal, or pregnant, and expected to give birth in March and April, respectively.Ī mare has an 11-month gestation period and gives birth to a single foal, Celeste Fender said.Ī mare can give birth to an average of 10 foals in a lifetime, she said. HBF Hot Expectations also was named the All American Quarter Horse Congress Amateur Hunter Under Saddle champion. The Congress is an annual event at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. In 2021, a quarter horse the Fenders own, HBF Hot Expectations, was named the All American Quarter Horse Congress Amateur Division All-Around champion. The Fenders once had as many as 30 horses but now have only eight, some of which are at other farms at one time or another for training or breeding. Holly Samko, who participated in showing horses with them as a child and adolescent, is a veterinarian in Pennsylvania. They also have the whole 16-acre farm to themselves. The Fenders do not provide riding lessons or board horses owned by others, but they continue to show their own quarter horses and paint horses. Honey Bear remains exclusively a breeding farm. When a filly matures, she is known as a mare, and the Fenders’ mare, Honey Bear, was the start of their breeding operations in 1976. Honey Bear was the name of a filly, a double-registered quarter horse and paint the Fenders owned, and she is the namesake of the farm. Meanwhile, a paint horse must be of quarter horse or thoroughbred lineage and derives its name from its white spots on a base color coat, she said. The quarter horse derives its name from its ability to sprint short distances, typically running faster than other horse breeds in a quarter-mile distance, Celeste Fender said. The Fenders showed American paint horses and quarter horses throughout the U.S. The farm has since been annexed into the city of Dublin. The Fenders shared a farm with another couple until 1973, when they took ownership of 16 acres within the larger parcel and established Honey Bear Farm at 6555 Rings Road, between Avery and Cosgray roads.
